My name is Ruth White. I am a mixed media fine artist.
My work is concerned with the human condition and our innate fear of mortality, as well as my own personal feeling of foreboding about our future. While this has been a feature of many cultures since time immemorial, the current state of the world and the various impending emergencies perhaps create a greater feeling of unease than ever before.
Inspiration comes from a childhood filled with ominous Public Information films, Protect and Survive leaflets, and Raymond Briggs’ When the Wind Blows.
My work is often landscape based, and onto it I project a human based psychological mood of disquiet – a sense that our lives are precarious and anything could happen.
I graduated in 2023 from Bath Spa University with a First Class Honours Degree in Contemporary Art and Professional Studies.
I was honoured to have one of my pieces, ‘Remains’ chosen by the RWA for the Open Exhibition 170. For this I received the Cass Art Materials Award, which was awarded for innovative use of materials. I have since had work selected for the RWA Open Exhibition 171, and this year’s 172, as well as being shortlisted this year for the RA Open Exhibition.
I have exhibited work in numerous exhibitions in the local area, and am due to have work exhibited for a second time at the Studio 3 Gallery, Clevedon, in August of this year, and also at Wells Museum.
