Ian ShiptonFrom: 10th September 2022
Until: 10th October 2022 History is presented to us as a narrative framed by a particular point of view. This viewpoint, however, is never neutral but coloured by the storyteller's perspective. Given the same facts, other stories can be imagined and events reinterpreted in many different ways. Also, as societies evolve, a changing view of the past will distort the textbook historical narratives, and consequently, ideas that once seemed true become flawed. These works are concerned with questioning the European-centered view of the world typified by empire building, the pursuit of profit, an infatuation with science and seeing the world and people as a resource to be exploited. I do not intend to provide an alternative "truth" as this would merely replace one story with another, but rather to playfully question our past and its legacy. Ian originally trained as a jeweller and silversmith; he has since worked in many creative fields, including interior design, product design, and, more recently, garden design, contributing to several RHS show gardens at the Hampton Court Flower Show. Ian has recently been teaching the "Contemporary Art & Professional Studies" program delivered in conjunction with Bath Spa University at Weston College. He is now pursuing other exciting creative projects. Contact details: Click here to Contact Ian via email. Come and see Ian's work at Studio 3 Gallery. |
