I enjoy designing pictures in glass. I am fortunate to have been passed a treasure trove of historic pigments to experiment with, each pouch of powder has a different characteristic and firing requirements.
I grind pigments with Clove oil into a paste in order to use a dip pen to paint an outline on my chosen glass. I fire this stain into the glass. I will then apply coloured minerals tints ground with alcohol by brush. This layer is then work into in a process of removing colour (shadowing or sgraffito). A usual method is to use gum Arabic as a mixing medium. I however suspect monks and tradesmen in medieval times would not have access to Gum trees! Pigments are fired into stain the glass. I then cut the lead and solder joints. My inspiration derives directly from my garden and photos of fabulous nature. For fused glass uses ‘bullseye glass’ in a process of cutting and arranging sheet glass, pigments and Fritts before then firing and fusing the layers together. |
