Life is full of fuss and complication, as an artist, I want to pare back the confusion and distraction to present the viewer with simple forms and colours and allow the them to develop the narrative for themselves. Simplicity is the keynote which I try to bear in mind when I set about a painting or drawing.
My paintings are predominantly of coastal villages, I love the strong shapes the cottages make, especially in bright sunlight. Older buildings, have, like people, great character, personality and humour, which I try to explore in my paintings.
Britain is a maritime nation; our history and culture is defined by the sea. The coast and its activities penetrate our language and thinking, the sea sustains us physically and emotionally; and without it we would be diminished. Those generations of seamen who have lived and worked by the sea have left their mark on the landscape in the shapes of their houses, and their workplaces. Each part of the coast has its own particular character and charm. These paintings are a celebration of the West Country shores and the places where those people made their lives.
As an entirely self-taught artist the journey of discovery has been interesting and surprising at times when things have not gone quite as planned, and these happy accidents are often incorporated into the finished piece!
