My name is Jamie, and I am a self-taught wood turner based here in Portishead. My workshop is set up in one of my outbuildings.
I was introduced to woodturning at school, albeit for only 1 lesson. However, my interest in trees and woodwork continues into my adult life. When I turned 50 (in 2016), I bought my lathe and began my woodturning adventure. The pieces I turn are unique, as no two pieces of wood in nature are ever the same. I try to exploit their individual characteristics, and I hope you can see this from my work. I have designed and made bespoke items for private clients and pieces for my own enjoyment. Here is a picture of a table lamp I designed and made for a client to remember a lost relative. The first piece that came off the lathe was a candlestick made for my sister (who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer). My inspiration came from a lighthouse – a beacon of light showing the way forward. I am glad to say she has made a good recovery and is well on the way to getting back to normal. Here is a picture of the candlestick. Click here to see more of Jamie's work on his website. |
