It’s probably pretty obvious that I love bold colour and dramatic composition, which probably reflects my early career as a drama teacher but always I try to capture an energy, usually by working quickly and in situ.
My interest is in people – not only what they look like but their feelings, their gestures, their interaction with others, and the world they like to build around themselves. Interiors fascinate me and how we read these as a reflection of the personality of others. I love stories and drama, so sometimes there will be a hint of narrative for the viewer to build on or respond to. Increasingly my work is studio based but on bright days the temptation to be outdoors wins – especially when there are sculptural trees calling to be drawn or brash blooms waiting to be painted. My colours and forms tend to be bold - lots of line, saturated colour and frequent use of black. I want my work to make a statement, to demand attention and project energy…. most often achieved from a period of fast and intense activity. I like to call it ‘conscious disengagement’ as once it’s done, the energy is spent. My work is usually on paper but canvas is making an appearance, using acrylic, ink, wax or chalk pastel – whatever comes to hand. |
