Lester Durston |
From: 23rd September 2023
Until: 13th January 2024 |
Lester grew up on a farm in Tickenham and attended the village school continued secondary education at the City of Bath Technical School and Nottingham University, ending up with a career in civil engineering. Working mostly around Bristol and Somerset, with others, he has left his mark on the landscape.
From his early teens he drew, painted and became interested in aspects of woodwork. Marquetry was one of the skills he taught himself.
At school his art master encouraged pen and ink drawing, especially of architectural subjects. This developed into a modest sideline in letterpress printing, starting with a printing block of a drawing of the parish church of Tickenham and producing family Christmas cards.
Over the years marriage, family and the inevitable lack of funds, necessitated him developing skills in home improvements and furniture making. A return to marquetry happened some years ago, incorporating the detailed panels in small wooden caskets made using native hardwoods. Some of the designs are of local scenes, others are abstract. Both have proved popular and are displayed in several galleries in Somerset.
Creativity is an itch that needs scratching!
